Infrastructure
The physical reality behind the curtain.
We colocate in a professional data centre facility. We won't say which one, partly for security, mostly because we're not entirely sure ourselves. What we can confirm: it has walls, a roof, and a server rack in there somewhere with our name taped to it.
Power
N+1 redundant power feeds, assuming N is a small number.
Backup generators
Installed, fuelled, and load-tested once a decade, whether they need it or not.
UPS batteries
Rated to bridge a power cut of up to several minutes, which has so far been enough.
Cooling
Climate controlled to a range generous enough to include most weather.
Fire suppression
Installed. Tested never, for reasons that should be obvious.
Network
Multiple redundant paths, in the sense that there is more than one cable.
Physical security
Biometric access, keycards, a man named Trevor who mostly just recognises people, and someone asleep on the mezzanine floor most nights.
Pest control
Contracted and in place, in case anything with more legs than us gets any ideas about the cabling.
Man-trap entrances
Two doors. You will be briefly trapped between them while someone in the NOC avoids eye contact through the window.
Recycling
Old hardware is recycled responsibly, or at least placed in a labelled bin.
Leak detection
Sensors under the raised floor, tested annually by someone in wellies.
Fuel supply contract
24-hour refuelling SLA from a supplier who is, as far as we can tell, also best effort. Diesel is tested periodically for water content, mostly by someone unscrewing the cap and having a look.
Visitor log
Paper, pen, mostly accurate.
Insurance
The facility is insured against fire, flood, and Trevor having a bad day.
None of the above is independently audited. We are, however, fairly confident it's all still there.
